The United States:)

In my opinon the United States had a more superior goverment to me. It had a better goverment in my opinion becuase the whole country had a say so in what is happening becuase it was a democracy. In Russia, there people didnt have that so it might put a little bit of anger in there society. Also, Russia did more to provoke america into to the cold war becuase the missles in cuba and all america wanted is them to go away and have everything go back to normal. Truman was also just trying to just contain communism becuase Russia was trying to spread it heavily. America could also just drop a few atomic bombs and end but we decided to be the bigger person and try to stay out without getting anyone hurt.

The Modern Day Effect

The Cold War had a great effect even til today. If the cold war had of ended different than what it did I dont know how much of America or Russia would still be standing til this day. It has effected how many wepons have been built, the effects of dropping atomic bombs, and also treaties. On April 8,2010 a treaty was jsut made bewteen Russia and America. It was called Start Treaty or Strategic Arms Reduction. This treaty will decrease the progession and building of nuclear weapons in America and Russia. This is a great reilef because it lowers a lot of tensions and stress bewteen these two super powers. It will also help us stop trying to one up each other and help us start working to together instead of being enemies.

Problems in China

There was a civil war fought in china bewteen nationalist and communist. The nationalists leader was Chiang Kai-shek and they were the south part of china. The communist was lead by Mao Zedong and they were the north part of china. The United States helped and supported nationalist by giving them money and leaders. The nationalist side did not have the best goverment at the time so they lost a few people to communism. That just gave communism more of the edge becuase they had more people behind there goverment. Since communism was more powerful it made nationalist fall back to Taiwan. The Soviets help support communism in China so Americans did not like the fact that China had fallen to communism instead of nationalism. Americans also did not like the fact the Soviets were helping the cause of communism. So that just shows another tension bewteen U.S and U.S.S.R in the battle of the Cold War.

The H-Bomb

The H-Bomb was first discovered by American scientist named Robert Oppenheimer. The bomb started off as a secret called the manhattan project and not even the president knew about it. The president first found out during World War two. We the united States dropped it on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The first was called "little man"dropped on hiroshima and second was called "fat man" dropped on Nagasaki. This was a huge success for Americas weaponary and technology. It was also a disater becuase the bombs killed a lot of innocent Japanese but to make a gain you have to take some loss so it wasnt easy to drop it. This is a tension of the cold war becuase U.S had a little advantage with the bomb over U.S.S.R. The Soviets havent made a nuclear weapon like the United States did at that time so it put the pressure on the Soviets to make a better bomb becuase Truman gave the go ahead to start the building and designing of more nuclear bombs.

The Korean War

The Korean War is a example of a Cold War tension. The war was fought between North and South Korea and how they were split becuase of there goverments. North Korea was all sbout communism and they were lead by Kim II Sung. They were aided and helped by USSR. On the other hand South Korea was all about nationalism and they were lead by Syngman Rhee. They were aided and helped by the United States so south would not fall to communism. The United States put American troops led by General MacArthur in South Korea whrn they found out North Korea was trying to over throw them. MacArthur pushed North Korea and USSR back to the 38th parrell by a suprise attack. He was then later fired for going againist commands from the United States. The reason this was a Cold War tension was becuase U.S.A was supporting the exact opposite of what USSR was so that just added anger for both sides.

U-2's?

Something that added to some of the tensions of the war were the U-2 incident. This is a plane that flies at very high altitudes so fighter planes couldnt get them and they could take a lot of pictures of whatever they flew over to see what is going on. This was a issue becuase the United States was flying the U-2's over Cuba to see the missiles and the Soviet Union did not like that. Eisenhower made the propsal of "open skies" and that meant the U.S.A could fly over Soviet Union without getting shot at or harmed. The Soviets rejected that idea and that just shows that they were trying to hide something. The U.S.A had to find out, so they made secret flights and some of them got shoot down sometimes. It scared americans so Eisenhower put a end to it but the U.S.A need only one more flight and a man named Gary Powers was shot down. He was questioned but the Soviets but that was all after Eisenhower said taht they would stop flying the U-2's. That issue right there just made the things worst as you can tell.

The Space Race?

There was a competition between the U.S.A and the Soviet Union.The tensions only grew when the Soviets launched sputnik. It was offically the first unmanned sateilite to go to space. It was about 200 hundred pounds and traveled around the earth at 20,000 mph. This was a huge sucess to the soviets becuase they were getting rockets in the air and the U.S.A has been trying to but still couldnt. This gave a fear to the american people that the Soviets could just attack us and we couldnt do anything about it. The United States was trying everything to help improve americans by making math, language class, and other class harder and required in the educational system. In the next few years U.S.A made a lot of progess and then they finally got there first ever satelitte in space without crashing. The tensions grew even higher after that becuase both were back equal with techonology and weaponry.

Overview of the Cold War

The cold war all began in 1945 when tensions rose. The cold war was fought bewteen the United States and Soveit Union. It got its name becuase both countries were afraid to go to directly to war becuase both countries had nuclear weapons that would destroy almost everything. So they never really trusted each other and they were always trying to make compromises that never worked out becuase they wouldnt want to give away how much each other had so they always lied so the compromise would be pointless. The main conflict was there goverments becuase they were exact oppossites. For instence, U.S.A had a democracy lead by president Harry S. Truman and the United States had freedom of speech,press, and others. The Soveit Unoin were all about power and had a communist goverment lead by Joseph Stalin. Joseph Stalin was always trying to expand his land and was always using totaliarianism. Both Countries always tried to one up each other to stay on top that is why there was always a competion.
